Am I the only one who always feels like January lasts at least 90 days?
Well, this year, using the excuse that I promised myself to update the blog on a monthly basis, it obviously flew by and, even though it feels like I wrote the December update just the other day, here we are already wrapping up the month!

As has been happening more and more often lately, I spent these weeks mostly mixing. I started working on the mixes for the new Sino Hearts album, recorded between Beijing, Hong Kong and Cernusco Lombardone. Last spring I helped Zhong finish some vocal and guitar overdubs where he felt my input could be useful, and now the album is in the mixing phase in Sarnico.

I also re-mixed a couple of Peawees tracks for a project that will be revealed soon: one is a cover recorded in 2022, while the other is an original song recorded by me and Alessio Lonati back in 2014… it was my very first studio work with the Peawees!
It was a lot of fun to listen again to tracks from 12 years ago and see how we worked back then. There was definitely much more inexperience, but also a lot more boldness in the way we did things, and that always made the records interesting, very personal and with a clear sonic identity. Lately I feel like I’ve found a good balance between the boldness and willingness to try new things of the early years and the precision and refinement that come with many years of work.

Recently, a few records I worked on have been released.
The first single from German band the Melmacs, “Run for Your Life”, is out now. It’s part of an album that will be released next spring and that I might talk about more in detail when it comes out; I handled the mixes.
A new version of “Food for My Soul” by the Peawees has also been released, which I recorded and mixed: I’ll probably talk more about this one as well when the whole project it’s part of is revealed.
The fifth single by Angel Names, “All You Can Eat”, is out as well; I recorded it at the end of 2024 at Big Tree studio in Brescia.

Additionally, the new album by the Spanish band EH, MERXTE’!, titled “Reza al Pop!”, has been released on Folc Records. I met the guys during a tour in Spain in 2024, where I was working as the sound engineer for the Peawees: they were opening the show in Vitoria and immediately struck me with their good songs, energy and precision on stage (I was also struck by the incredibly strong smell one of them managed to leave after using the dressing room bathroom we shared, but that’s definitely another story!).
After the show I had a chat with them and told them that, if they ever needed it in the future, I’d love to mix their next releases. They must have taken me very seriously, because not only did I end up mixing the album, but they also came to Italy for a week to record it with me at Turangalila!
It was a very fun but also very intense week, and both the band and I are extremely happy with the final result. It’s a punk rock / power pop record with strong ’70s influences, but with a very modern impact, and it definitely holds its own next to big productions. My weekends around Italy with Bee Bee Sea continue: this month I’ve been at Epifania Punk in Lecco and at the Get Action Weekend in Siena, where, during the drive there, I suddenly got a 40°C fever. Thanks to a skillful use of Tachipirina 1000, I managed to get through soundcheck and, most importantly, the show… partly thanks to the guys as well, who are more and more like war machines on stage.

Now I’m back to mixing the Sino Hearts album. After a long run of mixes, next month I’ll be in the studio with one of my favorite Italian bands. I can’t wait!

Solo io ho sempre la sensazione che gennaio duri almeno 90 giorni? Beh, quest’anno, con la scusa che mi sono ripromesso di aggiornare il blog con cadenza mensile, è volato ovviamente e, anche se mi sembra di aver scritto l’aggiornamento di Dicembre l’altro ieri, eccoci già qui a tirare le somme del mese!

Come succede ormai sempre più spesso, ho passato queste settimane prevalentemente a mixare. Ho iniziato i mix del nuovo disco dei Sino Hearts, registrato tra Beijing, Hong Kong e Cernusco Lombardone. La scorsa primavera ho aiutato Zhong a chiudere alcune sovraincisioni di voce e chitarre, in cui sentiva utile il mio intervento, e ora il disco è in fase di mix a Sarnico.

Ho anche re-mixato un altro paio di brani dei Peawees per un progetto che a breve verrà svelato: uno è una cover registrata nel 2022, mentre l’altro è un brano originale registrato sempre da me e Alessio Lonati nel 2014… era stato il mio primo lavoro in studio con i Peawees! È stato molto divertente riascoltare tracce di 12 anni fa e vedere come lavoravamo all’epoca. Sicuramente c’era molta più inesperienza, ma anche molta più audacia nel fare le cose, e ciò ha sempre fatto sì che i dischi fossero comunque interessanti, molto personali e con un preciso marchio sonoro. Ultimamente credo di aver trovato un buon equilibrio tra l’audacia mista alla voglia di provare cose nuove dei primi anni e la precisione e raffinatezza che si acquisiscono dopo tanti anni di lavoro.

Ultimamente sono usciti un po’ di dischi ai quali ho lavorato. È uscito il nuovo singolo dei Tedeschi Melmacs, “Run for Your Life”, che fa parte di un album in uscita la prossima primavera e del quale magari parlerò più a lungo quando uscirà; io mi sono occupato dei mix. È uscita anche una nuova versione di “Food for My Soul” dei Peawees, che ho registrato e mixato: anche di questa magari parlerò più approfonditamente quando verrà svelato l’intero progetto di cui fa parte.

Inoltre, è uscito per Folc Records il nuovo album degli spagnoli EH, MERXTE’!, dal titolo “Reza al Pop!”. Ho conosciuto i ragazzi durante un tour in cui facevo da tecnico del suono ai Peawees in Spagna nel 2024: loro aprivano la data di Vitoria e mi hanno subito colpito i loro brani, la loro energia e precisione sul palco (sono anche rimasto colpito dal forte odore che uno di loro è riuscito a lasciare dopo aver usato il bagno del camerino che avevamo in comune, ma questa è decisamente un’altre storia!). Dopo il concerto ci ho fatto due parole e gli ho detto che se avessero avuto bisogno in futuro, mi sarebbe piaciuto mixare i loro prossimi lavori. Devono avermi preso molto sul serio, perché non solo ho poi mixato il disco, ma sono venuti una settimana in Italia a registrarlo con me al Turangalila! È stata una settimana molto divertente, ma anche molto impegnativa, e sia io che la band siamo molto felici del risultato ottenuto. È un disco punk rock / power pop con marcate sonorità ’70s, ma con un impatto molto moderno, che non sfigura affatto accanto a grandi produzioni. Continuano i miei weekend in giro per l’Italia con i Bee Bee Sea: questo mese sono stato all’Epifania Punk di Lecco e al Get Action Weekend di Siena dove, durante il viaggio d’andata, mi è salita la febbre a 40. Grazie ad un sapiente utilizzo della Tachipirina 1000 sono riuscito a portare a casa soundcheck e, soprattutto, concerto… Un pò è merito anche dei ragazzi, che sono sempre più delle macchine da guerra sul palco.

Ora torno a mixare il disco dei Sino Hearts. Dopo una lunga serie di mix, il mese prossimo sarò in studio con una delle mie band italiane preferite. Non vedo l’ora!
